Painting
I am not the most artistic person out there. Â In fact, one of the things that intimidates me the most about being a mom is arts and crafts. Ugh. Just saying “arts and crafts” gives me the heebee jeebees. Crayons, stickers and stamps are about as far as I go, and even then I cringe every time Mena says “You try, Mommy” like she’s expecting some masterpiece out of me that I will never be able to deliver.
So when I heard about this Littlest Hands art class at a little in-home studio that offers classes every other week I jumped on the opportunity to expose Mena to some creative doing. I told her we were going to do art and the first thing she asked was if it she would be painting. Reluctantly I answered yes, fulling knowing that we are now at a phase of toddlerhood that you do not dare to mention anything unless you are one-hundred percent positive it’s going to happen. But a toddler art class without painting? I would hope not. So all morning painting turned into a brilliant term of bribery — which might I add has become a common practice around this house. Eat your cereal so you can paint. Let’s get dressed so you can paint. If you want to paint you need to sit down and put your shoes on.
We were the first to arrive, which was wonderful because that gave Mena full access to the easel. She thanked Meg, one of her art teachers, for the smock, paints and paper and went to work. Right away Meg and Ansley pointed out her use of color, use of the entire paper and concentration. When the other kids arrived a Valentines Day project was introduced which included gluing buttons, beads, paper cut-outs, noodles and ribbons to boxes and cards. Mena wasn’t near as interested in the gluing as she was the painting and constantly ran back to ‘her’ easel to continue her artwork. She did, however, decide to stick cut-outs and beads to her painting. You could imagine my pride when Meg marveled over her multi-media piece!
A MULTI-MEDIA PIECE! I really didn’t even know what that was, but I can guess. Do we have a natural on our hands, or what!?!!
I can’t say seeing Mena’s interest in art making me run to the nearest craft store to load up on potential projects but it does make me motivated to exposing her whenever possible. We will go to art class whenever possible and maybe even venture into the painting section of the Children’s Museum every now and then. And I will try not to cringe.

22 Months
We still listen to the top 20 on XM radio and now she’s not only interested in singing the songs, she wants to know who the artist is. Â This all started when Duane started telling her that her favorite song, Down, was by Jay Sean. Â After that she started asking “what’s this” to every song she recognized, asking the artist, and now she has the artists memorized to several songs. Â So when “Empire State of Mind” comes on she blurts out JAY-Z! Â It’s pretty hilarious.
Her Aries independence is becoming more and more evident everyday. Â She does incredibly well playing alone and reading books to herself. Â She loves her dollhouse Santa brought her and it’s so fun listening her talk to herself and hear what her dollhouse Mommy, Daddy and Baby have to say. Â Mommy and Daddy love to “cuddo”, go “nigh nigh” under a kleenex blanky and the baby sits on the potty because she’s a “big grill”. Â Her favorite toys for the moment are figurines. Â Animals, little people, trains or cars…. anything she can walk or drive around the furniture or our legs she almost always has one in her hands. Â Her newest figurines are a dinosaur and a panda bear. Â She showed them around the backyard this afternoon. She has at least 20 books (no joke) memorized and will flip the pages and read to herself for nearly an hour at a time. Â Her favorites to read to herself are The Little Red Hen, Goodnight Moon, Hey Wake Up, The Bellybutton Book, Baby Danced the Polka, and many many more. Â She even has a book of Mother Goose rhymes that she recites including Peter Piper! Â She loves to curl up on the couch with me and read the same books over and over again. Â Our weekly trips to the library is my attempt to stay sane.
For over a year now she has been going to bed at 7pm and waking on either side of 7am. Â Nap time can be a craps shoot. Â Some days I put her down at 1 and she will fall asleep right away and sometimes she plays and talks to herself for over an hour before falling asleep. Â Some days she’ll get a 3 hour nap; somedays only an hour and a half. Â Some days get sabotaged by a 10 minute snap (short-nap) in the car before we get home and then she won’t nap at all for the rest of the day. Â Those days make for rough evenings. Â I feel pretty lucky we have such a good little sleeper on our hands.
Mena is getting better every day at following directions, although of course she has her moments. Â One in particular that stands out the most is while waiting for our food at a restaurant she takes a crayon and says “only on paper” as she’s scribbling on the table, highchair or whatever. Â She also has a habit of putting her feet on the edge of the dinner table when she’s done with her meal. Â This drives Duane absolutely crazy but she still does it nearly every time. Â Oh and “no touch the plant” as she’s sweeping her little fingers across it. Â Grr.
She’s getting better each day at recalling things. Â She likes to tell Daddy what she during the day, who she saw and where she went. Â She is getting good at naming off the friends she will see at playgroup every week and is even starting to remember each kids Mom’s name. Â ”What’s that” is her favorite question of the moment and so our day is filled with explaining what that is. Â This inquisitive phase has just started yet I am already finding myself stumbling to find some answers. Â Oh, the best is yet to come!
She is so full of energy and smarter than ever. Â It’s impossible to remember our lives before she came along… I can’t believe it’s almost been two years since she entered our lives. Â We are just trying our best to soak up and enjoy each and every moment; it just goes by entirely too fast!

Getting Old?
I don’t know if it’s the hairdo — a ponytail instead of pigtails, which I have to admit I am a little jealous of the wispyness of it– but yesterday Mena just looked old. Not old-old, but old as in have-a-good-day-in-first-grade old. Her facial features are changing and her body is getting more solid — Now stop it, would ‘ya!

Let’s all go to the beach!
Mom, Mena and I went out to San Diego for a week to visit my sister. Mena hasn’t seen her Auntie Mimi since her first birthday but warmed up to her immediately. It also helped that Mena is in LOVE with Amy’s car. She has a red Prius she calls Ruby and Ruby was the first thing Mena talked about every morning and she constantly asked to go see Ruby when we weren’t in the car. Even now that we are home, whenever she sees a Prius she calls it Ruby — even if it’s not red. I can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that she can recognize makes of vehicles already.
The first two days we were there the weather was fabulous. Short sleeves and bare feet in January… how could we complain? So both days we headed to Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Mena chanted “Let’s all go to the beach, beach, beach”, a chant she learned from the Beach Day episode of Kai-Lan, the entire way there. She was so excited to take her shoes off and dive right in. Naturally, being January AND the Pacific Ocean the water was chilly but she didn’t seem to mind. She kept tugging at our arms saying “let’s go” and screamed with delight every time a wave crashed into her little legs. She loved stomping through the water, sifting sand between her toes and squealing as the sand washed out from under her feet. She also got a kick out chasing seagulls.
Then, as I am sure you all heard, California got pummeled with rain and wind which really just turned our vacation into an even more relaxing time than ever. Â Mena and her Grandma spent lots of time reading and looking over the golf course my sister lives on. Â We spent evenings cooking dinners, playing Bananagrams and reminiscing. Mena and her Auntie Mimi played around the living room, doing yoga poses, learning how to do summersaults and just goofing around. And lots of girl talk and it was such a nice time.
Because of all the rain we headed to the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. Â There were some crazy cool tanks in there including an amazingly strange dragon fish and a creepy octopus crawling across the glass. Â It was a wonderful way to spend a rainy morning.
The last day the sun came out and our way to the airport we stopped by La Jolla cove for one last look at the ocean and found ourselves completely amazed by the size of the waves that morning. Â The swell was amazing and the waves were huge. Â Cliffs that Duane and I walked on three years ago were covered with crashing waves and the seals were getting sprayed with flying water. Â It’s always sad to go, not knowing when we’ll get to see Amy next and knowing how much Mena is going to change in the meantime. Â I am so glad Mena and I decided to piggyback on my mom’s trip to San Diego. Â Us girls don’t have a lot of just girl time anymore and it was priceless.

A Tiny Splash of Warm
Today was the first day in weeks that we’ve enjoyed a temperature over 45 degrees. We got a cold snap before we left for Canada, then of course Canada is cold, then the day after we got back it snowed 6+ inches and that snow has been on the ground ever since. So Mena enjoyed a few minutes enjoying the snow that is still on the ground in our backyard.
I hope she had fun because the high on Thursday is 11 degrees — we’ll be staying inside.

Movie Girl
My mom and I decided to attempt to take Mena to see The Princess and the Frog this weekend. There was definitely a part of me that thought it was a ridiculous idea of mine. I mean, we have “watched” Finding Nemo but she never actually watches more than 15 or 20 minutes at a time. So we rolled the dice, fully accepted that we might be walking out of the theatre early and gave it a shot! Â Besides, *I* really wanted to see it!
Turns out she is a perfect movie date. We boosted her up in her “biiig chair” in a plastic booster seat, gave her a baggie of “popcorn” (Pirates Booty) and she sat there quietly and in awe for the entire 95 minutes. There were a few scary moments — which I tend to forget about Disney Princess movies — and couple times where she gasped “Uh-oh” and “wha-happen Mommy?” and around the 80 minute mark she came to sit on my lap and started twirling her hair — something she does before she falls asleep — but she stayed awake the entire time and is still talking about her “moo-ey” experience and the froggies. Priceless!
