A little grin from Gummi Bear
This week we got to do our 3D/4D Ultrasound to take a glimpse at that little bundle of joy in my belly. It was a totally different experience than our session with Mena which was new and serene. This time we had a bubbly two-year-old who was VERY excited to “see Gummi Bear in the computer”. She has been to an ultrasound already during a regular doctor appointment and has a book that talks about prenatal visits and shows the mom and little kid looking at a sonogram, so she knew exactly what to expect.
As I got comfortable on the bed, Mena chatted away about the baby in my belly and as soon as the technician turned on the screen she was squealing with excitement. When we got our first glimpse of Gummi Bear she exclaimed “That’s AMAAAAZING!”. She kept saying over and over again — an expression I don’t think I’ve ever heard her use before. As the session went on it was “I see a nose. I see ears. I see eyes. I see a mouth” and “Oh my gosh, that’s amaaaaazing!”.
And you’re right Mena, it is truly amazing! We can’t wait to see you in person, little Gummi Bear.

Camping, Jellystone Style
Last weekend we headed up to Estes Park for our (now) Annual Playgroup Camping Trip. Â Of course, the term ‘camping’ is a bit of a stretch considering we’ve only gone to cabins and this year is even less roughing it than last year was but it was a success!
We ended up at Estes Park’s Jellystone Campground, complete with Yogi Bear appearances, a swimming pool, candy bar bingo, and many many other kid-friendly activities. Â If someone would have told me three years ago that this was going to be my idea of camping after I had kids I would have laughed in their face! Â But really, it works, especially for five families, ,two pregnant moms and seven kids ranging from 1-4 years old.
In fact, this location ended up being really perfect and the weekend was quite enjoyable. Â Three of our five cabins backed to each other with a fire ring and picnic table in the middle so that’s where we ended up congregating for the weekend. Â Meals were split between families, toys were gathered and shared, and lucky for us our sites were right next to a slab of concrete basketball court that made a great boundary and flat surface for the kids to play, play, play!
This year seemed so much more enjoyable. Â I am sure it had everything to do with the fact that the kids are older and as parents we are letting go a little bit more with experience but I think part of what was nice was that we all took care of each other. Â There were many occasions where one parent would be successfully watching four or five kids while the other parents had a chance to chat. Â We all felt comfortable watching each other’s kids, disciplining each other’s kids, and trusting each other with our kids. Â It gave us all a chance to relax, play and enjoy the weekend and we feel so fortunate to have found such a great group of families that we can share these memories with!

Feeding Fish

A couple weekends ago we took a quick weekend trip to Nebraska to visit my mom and Richard. Most of the weekend was spent in their big, beautiful backyard and most of that was spent at the coy fish pond or running through the sprinkler. Mena really enjoyed it when Grandpa dug up worms and she got to throw them in the pond for the fish. She wasn’t at all phased by the little worms but one especially plump and slimy nightcrawler was a little more than she could handle.Duane and I took advantage of the time to relax and let someone else play with Mena for the weekend. We napped, relaxed and watched some World Cup soccer. Lovely.
Here are the highlights of the weekend.

Nothing Baby
This last few weeks we have basically widdled away at anything baby where Mena is concerned. First it was converting her crib into the toddler bed which coincidentally directly coincided with throwing away the pacifier, then it was drinking her milk from a big girl cup during meals, and now potty training. I have been hesitant to shout from the rooftops that we have a potty trained little girl but we are getting close. All these changes have hit me really hard lately. Sure, I knew they were going to happen and after finding out Gummi Bear would be arriving as Mena turned 2 and a half my three goals were getting her in a bed, taking away the paci and potty training, so I really have nothing to be shocked about but for some reason it’s still hard to swallow. There is NOTHING baby about her anymore. Nothing. Well, unless you count the multiple times a day she asks to be rocked like a baby recently. Clearly she recognizes these big changes too.
As for the potty training, like I said, we’re getting there. Some days she is a rock star, using the potty every time and telling us when she has to go. Other days she just decides to be lazy, I think. We started the process a month ago after a week of Mena fighting wearing a diaper. She would tell me she didn’t want to wear one anymore, kick and cry when I tried to put one on her and fight the entire process. When I asked her if she’d rather use the potty and wear big girl underpants, though, she was indifferent. She wasn’t excited about the idea at all.
We’ve been through all the stages of potty training.  Many more stages than I even knew existed.  Within the first few hours Mena was begging us to rock her like a baby, by the second day she was asking for diapers; she would get excited about going one day and cry through it the next.  One day she would spring up so fast before she was even finished and run across the house and the next day she would sit there so long after she was done we had to beg her to get off the potty.  One day she would be willing to ‘try’ every 30 minutes whether she had to go or not and the next she would fight sitting on the potty even when she had to go.  One day she can’t wait to get more stickers on her sticker chart and then next she throws a temper tantrum because, although she earned one, she doesn’t want any stickers. We have been alternating going out of the house with pull-ups or with regular underwear. You should see the “Oh Shit” look on our faces when Mena says she has to pee when we’re out and about– we’re still not sure we know how long she can hold it while we look for a restroom. Oh my, our lives revolve around the potty right now and I don’t anticipate that changing anytime soon.  Let’s just say she’s definitely been keeping us on our toes.

I’ve often wondered if we did all these changes too close to each other but I guess that’s just how life works sometimes. Â I’m trying to look at it like teething — it was painful to have nearly all of her teeth come in at the same time but at least it was short lived. Â I know there are many many more fin things to come, but can’t help to be a little sad about losing the baby in her already. Â Now we are just dealing with the emotional pain of our baby growing so fast!

Something about tutus makes little girls smile…
- Mena has never ever ever fallen asleep while one of us were reading to her. Â Never, at least, until I read Sleeping Beauty for the first time. Â Then the second. Â Then the third. Â I find it incredibly ironic that Sleeping Beauty is the only book that puts her to sleep.
- When Mena climbs in her booster seat at the kitchen table she calls for one of us to “scoop her in”.
- A new favorite: Flintstones “Violins” (vitamins).
- We tried a Tae Kwon Do class for Mena and decided she was just a little too young for it. Â The first class we tried she participated but the second one she wanted to sit on my lap the entire time so we decided it would be better to wait about a year.
- Shortly after we moved into the new house, Mena and I were having lunch on the deck and she told me that it makes her happy to see the mountains from our house. Â Me too, little girl. Â Me too.
- When asked by a friend of mine, Mena said she thinks she’s going to get a baby brother and when asked what to name him she said “Sister”.
- Something that makes Mena very very happy:  A markered smiley face on the back of Costco receipt done by the checker as we walk out the door.  She loves to hand them the receipt, say “smiley face please” and always says thank you when they give it to her.  The she will happily play, sing and dance with the receipt in the backseat the entire way home.
- Somehow we ended up with a Barbie toting, princess loving little girl. Â I don’t know why I am surprised. Â I guess just because I don’t consider myself the most girly of girls. Â But ever since going to see The Princess and the Frog in the theatre back in January she has grown to LOVE princess stories. Â We have several of the Little Golden Books versions of Disney princess movies (Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White) and they are her favorite books to read. Â The other day she told me that she wants a pink princess dress. Â Oh, it has begun!
- On hot days we’ve been turning on the whole house fan at night which means we need to open Mena’s door at night — something we’ve not ever done especially since converting the crib to a toddler bed. Â The first morning she walked up to Duane’s side of the bed and woke him up quietly saying “Hi Daddy!”. Â The next morning she gently touched my side of the bed and waited until I opened my eyes. Â What a fabulous way to wake up in the morning!
- The other morning Mena, her grandma and I were out on the deck watering flowers when Mena yelled “HON-EY, I need some more water”. Â Apparently not only are we on a first name basis but a pet name basis as well! Â My mom and I almost peed our pants we laughed so hard!
- A few months ago the term “muggin’” was introduced in our house. Â A muggin’ is the act of wiping off Mena’s face after meals, which strangely resembles someone coming up behind you in the alley and putting their hand over your mouth to mug you. Â I can’t tell you how many looks we’ve gotten when we say “okay, it’s time for a muggin’” after a meal out. Â It’s especially funny when Mena hops down from her booster seat and says “Mommy, I need a muggin’”!

Second Child Syndrome
It starts before they are even born. Things just don’t get done as quickly for the second child as they did for the first. This ultrasound, for example, was taken on May 14th — nearly a month ago. Mena’s ultrasounds would get scanned and blogged about within an hour of getting home from our doctor’s appointment. Never a month!

Since we’re not finding out what we are having the ultrasound tech only gave us face pictures of Gummi Bear. Â Duane’s theory is that GB is a boy since that would be more obvious if we got fully body pictures in ultrasound. Â We’ll just have to wait and see!!! Â I’m 26 weeks along already and Gummi Bear is as active as ever! Maybe that’s how they remind me that they are still there. Not that I could ignore this ever growing belly of mine. I swear if this growth keeps up I am going to be a whale by the end of this pregnancy.
According to BabyCenter.com Gummi Bear is nearly 14 inches long and weighs about a pound and a half. Gummi Bear loves to listen to me read out loud to Mena and kicks and punches at all the most inconvienent times — like at one in the morning when I’m trying to fall back asleep from the first bathroom trip of the night or as I am driving in the car and can’t take the time to sit and feel the kicks with my hands.
Now, to start a journal to Gummi Bear as I did for Mena. I’m not too far behind on that, though. I think I started Mena’s journal around the 27 week mark… that gives me one week to get on the ball!
